Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about MTVFC #2, volunteering, and membership.

Do I need any prior firefighting or emergency experience to join?

No prior experience is necessary! We welcome members from all backgrounds and skill levels. MTVFC #2 provides all personal protective turnout gear, in-house mentorship, and formal academy training (such as NJ State Firefighter 1 certification) at absolutely no cost to you.

How can I apply or visit the fire station?

You can apply online anytime by completing the application form above. You are also warmly invited to stop by the firehouse any Wednesday at 7:00 PM (529 Route 518, Skillman, NJ 08558) to meet the crew, tour the apparatus bays, and ask questions in person!

What is the time commitment expected of a volunteer firefighter?

We understand our members balance full-time jobs, families, and academic schedules. Regular company drills and business meetings take place on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM. Emergency calls occur 24/7/365, and members respond when available using modern smartphone alert systems and pagers.

What are the age requirements to join MTVFC #2?

Active firefighting, fire police, and associate membership is open to anyone 18 years of age and older. For trainees ages 16 to 18, we offer an active Junior Firefighter Program that teaches hands-on skills, emergency operations, and leadership while prioritizing school and family.

Can I join if I don't want to go inside burning buildings?

Yes, absolutely! There are numerous critical roles that do not involve interior structure firefighting. You can serve as a Fire Police Officer (scene safety & traffic management), an Exterior Firefighter, or an Associate Member assisting with administration, IT, community outreach, and station logistics.

How does MTVFC #2 get dispatched to emergencies?

When 911 is dialed in Montgomery Township or surrounding areas, Somerset County Emergency Communications alerts our station. Volunteer members receive real-time notifications on pagers and dispatch apps, quickly report to the firehouse at 529 Route 518 in Skillman, don their turnout gear, and respond on the appropriate apparatus.

How is MTVFC #2 funded, and are donations tax-deductible?

Montgomery Township Volunteer Fire Company #2 is an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. While we receive municipal assistance and support from the Montgomery Township Board of Fire Commissioners District #2 (BOFC46.com) for baseline operational expenses, we rely heavily on community contributions and annual fund drives to purchase lifesaving rescue gear and maintain our fleet. All donations are 100% tax-deductible and can be made through our Donate section.
