Answer the Call Early
The Junior Firefighter Program at Montgomery Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 (MTVFC #2 / Station 46) offers young men and women ages 16 to 18 the unique opportunity to learn about the fire service first-hand.
Junior members are treated as future standard firefighters. Under the supervision of line officers and experienced senior members, you will gain hands-on training, build strong leadership qualities, perform community service hours, and prepare for a career or lifelong volunteer journey in emergency services.
Program Guidelines
- Ages: Must be 16 or 17 years old to apply.
- Academics First: Maintaining passing grades is required. School functions always take priority.
- Safety First: Juniors are strictly kept out of hazardous zones (e.g., active interior structures or active highway lanes).
What You Will Learn
Real skills, safety operations, and emergency training alongside professionals.
Vehicle Extrication
Learn how to safely stabilize passenger vehicles, handle cribbing blocks, and support line crews using hydraulic rescue tools (the Jaws of Life) during simulated car accident drills.
Hose & Water Ops
Understand fire hydrant connections, water supply lines, and how to pack, deploy, and direct attack hose lines alongside senior firefighters during regular company drills.
Radio & Communications
Master standard dispatcher protocols, radio etiquette, and how to operate fire ground radios to ensure constant, crystal-clear team communication.
SCBA & Search Ops
Get familiar with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (air packs) and learn primary search-and-rescue team operations, patterns, and safety maneuvers in non-toxic environments.
Ladders & Tools
Gain proficiency raising ground ladders, deploying exhaust fans, and operating basic fire ground equipment, tools, gas meters, and thermal imaging cameras.
Marine Support
Support Marine 46 swift water rescue preparations, handling safety lines, life vests, and equipment coordination from staging zones during water emergencies.
